It’s the Pinewood Derby Post!

The pinnacle event of the year is almost upon us. With the Pinewood Derby a few weeks away, here’s everything you need to know to get rolling (pun intended).

Step 1: Get your stuff
If you don’t already have your Pinewood Derby kit, connect with your den leader.

Step 2: Get crackin’ on March 1
This Sat., March 1, scouts are able to get help cutting their car at the Stephenson house (2049 N 53rd St.) from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The rules have been revised this year. Make sure you peruse the updated 2014 rules.

If you’d like to take your car for a test drive, attend the District Pinewood Derby on Sat., March 8 in church hall from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Step 3: Get weighed in on March 15
The weigh-in for the Pinewood Derby is March 15 from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Saint Sebastian. Any scout participating in the Pinewood Derby must register his car during this time. There will be some tools on hand to make some minor adjustments. Just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither should you shoehorn your car’s construction into this single day. After weigh in, the cars will be stored onsite until the race the next day. Cars will not be allowed to be entered on March 16.

Volunteers needed on Saturday:

  • 3-4 people to help get the track down from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
  • 6+ to help with weigh-in by volunteering for a shift during the 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. timeframe

Step 4: Off to the races on March 16
Our Pinewood Derby is scheduled for March 16 at 12:00 p.m.. Concessions will be available during the race. Come hungry, come happy. It’s gonna be a good time!

Volunteers needed on Sunday:

  • 3-4 Boy Scouts to help with the race
  • Pit manager
  • Computer operator

If you are willing to help out the pack and volunteer for one of the needs listed above, please contact Dave Blanchard or Ed Heidenreich.

Gentlemen, Start Your Engines!

The pinnacle event of the year is almost upon us. With the 2013 Pinewood Derby about a month away, here’s everything you need to know to get rolling (pun intended).

Step 1: Get your stuff
If you don’t already have your Pinewood Derby kit, connect with your den leader. (Wolves who didn’t receive their kits at Blue & Gold will receive it at school.)

Step 2: Get crackin’ on March 2
This Sat., March 2, Pack 231 is hosting a Pit Stop at Washington Heights Woodworking at 3915 W. McKinley Ave. from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (Look for the green door next to the overhead garage door.) The Pit Stop allows scouts and their Akelas to get a start on their cars with all the needed tools available to them. It’s not a required event, though it is particularly helpful for families unfamiliar with building a Pinewood Derby car and anyone who does not have the right tools to cut and shape a block of wood. Make sure you peruse the official Pack 231 Pinewood Derby Rules.

Step 3: Get weighed in on Sat., March 23
The weigh-in for the Pinewood Derby is March 23 from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Saint Sebastian school’s cafeteria. Any scout participating in the Pinewood Derby must register his car at any time during this time frame. There will be some tools on hand to make some minor adjustments. Just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither should you shoehorn your car’s construction into this single day. After weigh in, the cars will be stored onsite until the race the next day. Cars will not be allowed to be entered on race day, Sun., March 24.

Volunteers needed on Saturday:

  • 3-4 people to help get the track down before weigh-in begins
  • 7+ to help with weigh-in by volunteering for a shift during the 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. timeframe

Step 4: Off to the races on Sun., March 24
Our Pinewood Derby is scheduled for March 24. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and the race begins at 1:00 p.m. The Lightning Cobras den will be hosting a concession stand to raise funds. Come hungry, come happy and have lunch at the Pinewood Derby. It’s gonna be a good time!

Volunteers needed on Sunday:

  • 3-4 Boy Scouts to help with the race
  • Pit manager
  • Computer operator support

If you are willing to help out the pack and volunteer for one of the needs listed above, please email Lena Stephenson.

Step up to the Plate for Scout Night with the Lakeshore Chinooks

When you get a whiff of this, you’re going to want to get in on the action. On Thurs., June 28, join Pack 231 and other area scouts for Scout Night at Concordia University’s Kapco Park (see map) to see the Lakeshore Chinooks battle their summer college league rivals, the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters.

For just $12, the experience includes:

  • A ticket to the game
  • A hot dog and soda voucher
  • All uniformed scouts and leaders on field for the national anthem
  • In between inning recognition of the Pack
  • Post-game base run
  • A commemorative patch

Let’s strive for close to 100 percent participation. Why? Here’s why, slugger: the largest scout group at the game will be able to perform the color guard ceremony. Talk about a home run, eh?

Sign up by June 5 by completing the form below.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact Dave Blanchard.

Sign up for the Cub Scout Winter Blast

Now that winter has finally reared its ugly head, why not meet it head on at the 2012 Cub Scout Winter Blast? On Sat., Feb. 25, join local cub scouts for an outdoor event filled with games and running challenges in the great outdoors. Make sure to dress warmly, because there’s no prize for catching cold first.

The event is $6 for scouts and $4 for a sibling, friend, cousin, neighbor, taxidermist, etc. (You get the idea.) The other key component to joining the winter games is this: each person needs to bring a can of soup (no cream soups, please) for a soup dump at lunch. Hot dogs will also be provided at lunch, and a patch is included in the cost per scout.

If you’d like to sign up through Pack 231, complete the sign up form below by Wed., Feb. 22. Registration any time after that should be done at Richard Street Armory beginning at 8:30 a.m. on the morning of the event.
